Client Objectives
The Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market project sought to deliver a modern, large‑scale produce distribution facility capable of supporting a global supply chain while preserving cold‑chain integrity from farm to table. As a public‑private partnership partially funded by state and federal sources, the project required strict compliance with design standards, regulatory oversight, and operational performance requirements.
Results
During the project, Cresa discovered that the design and construction team were not adhering to the Basis of Design for the new facility, prompting them to take corrective actions to keep the project on track.
The project was delivered as a $218.5 million development spanning 64 acres and 850,000 square feet, doubling the size of the former market and establishing one of the largest contiguous refrigerated facilities in the United States.
The project was delivered as a $218.5 million development spanning 64 acres and 850,000 square feet, doubling the size of the former market and establishing one of the largest contiguous refrigerated facilities in the United States.
The market accommodates 32 vendors, each with independent access to the exterior and control over their refrigeration systems. Merchants can regulate temperatures from 33 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit in individual stalls, depending on the type of produce being stored. Sitting directly above the Market is 150,000 SF of office space where sales staff sells and trade fruits and vegetables around the world.
The facility includes 228 enclosed and fully refrigerated docks, each 50' wide, with ceiling heights of 40'. It also features a skylight that runs the entire length of the 1/4 mile-long building, along with a central walking concourse that is open to the public.
