Client Objectives

The client sought to reposition the historic Paramount Building by relocating its primary entrance from Broadway to West 43rd Street while preserving the building’s iconic Art Deco character. The project required creating a dramatic new arrival experience for visitors and tenants, including a double-height escalator foyer leading to a third-floor sky lobby.

Results

Cresa successfully managed the extensive renovations and technical challenges required to execute this transformative project. Historic elements were carefully relocated, restored, or reinterpreted, including the disassembly and restoration of the Paramount Theater’s stained-glass window, now showcased above the new escalator atrium within a custom cast bronze enclosure. Additional architectural details were recreated to honor the original design, including Italian Portoro Negro stone, plaster moldings and rosettes, cast bronze grills, and custom wallpaper and glass.

The project required seamless coordination across complex infrastructure upgrades, including three-story escalators, elevators, mechanical and plumbing systems, electrical and IT rooms, asbestos abatement, and structural steel modifications. The completed lobby relocation enhances the building’s presence, improves functionality, and creates new opportunities for retail tenancy. In recognition of its excellence, the project was awarded the ENR New York Regional Best Project Award.
