Client Objectives

Our relationship with Please Touch Museum (PTM) began in 1999 on one of the country’s largest, most extensive museum renovations of its kind. The project required a rigorous site selection process, long-term planning strategy, and a comprehensive approach to relocating and expanding the museum into a significantly larger, historically significant facility while enhancing accessibility, visibility, and visitor experience.

Results

Cresa performed due diligence on 45 potential sites before guiding the selection of Memorial Hall—a nationally registered historic landmark—positioning the Museum for long-term visibility and accessibility. The $88 million, 11-year project included relocating the Museum from a 38,000 SF facility into the 157,000 SF Memorial Hall.

The project also featured the design and construction of a 9,000 SF glass and steel addition to house a fully restored, 100-year-old Philadelphia carousel, creating a signature experience and centerpiece for visitors. Throughout the process, Cresa coordinated complex design and construction efforts, ensuring exhibit integration aligned with the building’s historic framework while delivering a multi-award-winning result.

Cresa later led the restoration of the Memorial Hall dome and lantern, addressing a 140-year-old structural issue while the Museum remained fully open and operational. This required highly detailed logistical coordination, including the installation of structural steel and a full exterior scaffolding system without disrupting daily operations.

The team also worked closely with key stakeholders, including the Historic Commission, RACP, and Fairmount Park Commission, to successfully navigate approvals and regulatory requirements. Through long-term partnership and hands-on project leadership, Cresa helped transform Please Touch Museum into a significantly expanded, modernized institution while preserving its historic character and enhancing its impact within the community.
