Summer in the City: Explore Boston Like a Local

With summertime in our sights, Boston is abuzz with outdoor dining and waterfront activities as residents eagerly welcome the warmer months. The season brings countless opportunities to explore the city and get a feel for the local culture. From time-tested mainstays to new-on-the-scene spots, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite places to get a taste of Boston living.

1. All Aboard Tall Ship

This became one of the hottest spots in the city last summer for outdoors drinks with a view. Guests can sip cocktails and shoot oysters aboard a 245-foot ship moored in East Boston along the pier, which has a rotating lineup of food trucks, yard games, and live music.

2. Market Madness

Boston’s local maker scene pays homage to the city’s rich history of trade and craft. In Somerville, Bow Market is home to more than 30 small businesses, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a bite and peruse the shops. Across town in the South End, the SoWa Open Market is a Sunday favorite for crafts and local produce. Be sure to check out the maker spaces and galleries as you explore the market and artist community.

3. Fun at Fenway

No Boston travel guide is complete without the requisite visit to Fenway Park. Grab a Fenway Frank, check out the Green Monster, and sing along to Sweet Caroline while you watch the Red Sox try to make another playoff run in America’s Most Beloved Ballpark.

4. Take in Some Tunes

There are live music venues nestled throughout Boston’s neighborhoods, and these spots are especially popular come summertime. Catch an outdoor show at Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston’s bustling Seaport neighborhood, or visit nearby newcomer Grace by Nia for jazz, soul, and R&B performances as part of a soul-infused supper club experience.

5. Roll With It

Sunny days mean lobster rolls in New England. Whether you like yours warm with butter or chilled with mayo, stop in at one of the many lobster roll vendors to taste how it’s done in Boston. The options can be overwhelming, so do your research ahead of time.
